Mazda's All-New compact crossover is the new standard-bearer in the segment
It's official crossovers have now overtaken as SUVs as one of the most popular automotive segments in America. But what does that mean for people here in New Hampshire? Between the existing Mazda CX-5 and the all-new, smaller CX-3 there's now a crossover for every taste in the Mazda lineup. Despite its smaller size, what won't CX-3 buyers be giving up? We put our Werner Mazda experts to work on just this question and they arrived at one simple word - Capability.
Getting behind the wheel of this new-for-2016 subcompact crossover, will leave you breathless - especially if you love driving dynamics. With this CUV, Mazda certainly hasn't forgot its roots. This is
the same company that brought us the all-new MX-5, after all. So far, the release date has been announced to be on the fall of 2015, so we should see it hitting our lots here at Werner Mazda pretty soon.
The car has been designed to target small families but still has plenty of space. According to The Car Connection the 2016 CX-3 "shines." "It's exterior design is one of the most impressive, (…) and from any angle, the CX-3 is an attractive vehicle, offering an elegant, up-market feel with a clear intention for sporty behavior on its sleeve."
'Soul of Motion' design language running through its veins
The new CX-3 continues with Mazda's current KODO "Soul of Motion" language, giving it a sporty and athletic look and an elegance that's not common in the segment. Mazda is rolling out this design language across its entire portfolio as its bigger brother, the CX-5 and the MX-5 both sport the swooping lines of the KODO. Inside is not different, its elements and features will make you feel like you're driving a much more expensive automobile. Also, the electric power steering is nicely weighted to make you feel stability and without losing maneuverability.
Mazda's designers didn't stop at the exterior. Several reviewers stated that the 2016 CX-3 is one of the best-driving vehicles in this new compact crossover segment. The new 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G four-cylinder is smooth and quiet. This engine makes 146-horsepower and 146 lb-ft of torque. Thanks to this engine, and Mazda's knack for creating lightweight cars, the CX-3 accelerates quite enthusiastically - especially compared to competitors in the compact crossover segment. Regarding fuel economy, Mazda estimates the new CX-3 to rate 29 mpg
city and 35 mpg highway with the front-wheel drive model and 27 city/32
highway with the all-wheel drive model.
The 2016 Mazda CX-3 comes with a six-speed automatic transmission and the option of front-drive or all-wheel-drive. Thanks to our New England weather, we would suggest the latter, that is, unless you want to invest in a nice set of winter tires. This last comes with a computer-controlled system that compensates the loss of traction on the front wheels and also predicts the need of more torque at the rear wheels. This is calculated through a network of sensors and data including ambient temperature, steering effort and angle and vehicle acceleration.
The cockpit remains centered on the driver as in every other Mazda model. It has a well-organized instrument cluster and a 7-inch infotainment control screen in the center and also the Mazda Connect smartphone integration that offers voice control, audio text messaging and Internet radio apps like Stitcher or Pandora. Autoblog wrote in their review that "as more and more automakers get on board with large dials to operate this technology, we're happy to report Mazda has a premium-feeling setup, even in its most affordable models."
World Class Safety - Without the Cost
Without forgetting safety, the 2016 Mazda CX-3 offer the latest features for the welfare of their passengers. This car can be equipped with lane departure and rear cross-traffic alerts, automatic braking to avoid or reduce the severity of a frontal collision, rain-sensing wipers and adaptive cruise control. Those were features reserved for the luxury segment just a few years ago.
With a starting price of about $22,500 dollars, you're certainly not paying 'luxury' prices for this car. It's actually less expensive than a lot of its competitors in its segment. It's $2,500 cheaper than the Buick Encore and despite the diminutive price, Autoblog has praised Mazda for creating "the best car in the segment." That's high praise, indeed. Of course, we're inclined to agree.
