What's New for the 2018 Mazda CX-5?

The Mazda CX-5 is the best-driving and best-looking compact crossover on the market. It sets itself apart from the competition with engaging driving dynamics, distinctive styling, and a quiet cabin. Seeing it in the showroom will intimidate you because it looks more expensive than it is. Adding to its charm is the pièce de résistance chassis which blends refined road manners with precise steering. A beautifully wrought interior and a responsive powertrain make this five-seater a driver's vehicle. It was entirely redesigned for 2017, but the 2018 model still introduces several additions and improvements. New are such standard features as blind-spot monitoring, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, rear cross-traffic alert, and a leather-wrapped shift knob. Touring models receive a full suite of upgraded active safety features as standard. Also, the engine now has cylinder-deactivation technology that shuts down two cylinders at cruising speeds to save fuel.

Trims & Features

The 2018 Mazda CX-5 compact crossover comes in three flavors: Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring. Standard equipment on the base Sport model include 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, a rearview camera, cloth upholstery, Bluetooth connectivity, and the MazdaConnect infotainment module with a 7.0-inch touchscreen. The Touring model adds keyless entry, leatherette upholstery, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, 19-inch alloy wheels, and four USB ports. Opting for the top-ranking Grand Touring earns you more superlatives, including a power-operated passenger seat, memory settings for the driver's seat, LED taillights, LED foglights, adaptive LED headlights, navigation, a power liftgate, a moonroof, and a Bose premium audio system. There are also a couple of packages for drivers who might want to enhance their vehicles' safety and luxury. The Touring Preferred package adds a power liftgate, navigation, the Bose premium audio system, and a sunroof to the Touring model. The Grand Touring model can also be enhanced with the Grand Touring Premium package which offers heated rear seats, a head-up display, and a heated steering wheel.

Horsepower

All 2018 Mazda CX-5 models have the front-wheel drive as standard and AWD as an upgradable option. A powerful, yet economical 2.5-liter I-4 engine powers the latest CX-5. It delivers an ample 187 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque and is linked exclusively to a six-speed auto transmission. The EPA estimates that a front-wheel-drive 2018 CX-5 will drive for 25 miles and 31 miles on the gallon in the city and on the highway respectively. If fitted with the rear-wheel drivetrain, the same engine is expected to return about 24 mpg and 30 mpg in city and highway driving modes respectively. Mazda is expected to release a diesel-powered variant soon.

Safety

Standard safety equipment consists of rear cross-traffic alert, an automatic emergency braking system, and blind-spot monitoring. Touring and Grand Touring models receive active safety enhancements such as adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, lane departure warning, and high-speed automatic emergency braking. The same active safety suite is available to the Sport model via the Sport i-ActivSense package. The 2018 CX-5 received a four-star (out of a possible five stars) overall safety rating from the NHTSA. The IIHS also granted it its highest possible score of "Good" in all crash-worthiness tests. It further received an "Acceptable" score on the headlights test. Additionally, it obtained a "Superior" rating in the front crash prevention test after it successfully mitigated against 12- and 25-mph collisions (Superior is the highest possible score in the front crash prevention test). Thus, the 2018 Mazda CX-5 is considered an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ vehicle.
