It’s a Beauty Contest

The 2020 Mazda CX-5 boasts luxury, athleticism, and sophistication, blending the finest amenities and conveniences and presenting them in a stylish package. When you do something great, others are always going to try to steal your spotlight; enter the 2020 Honda CR-V. Backed by popularity, the CR-V is a common choice for those who are unfamiliar with the poise and dynamic engineering of the CX-5. However, the true question is, can it knock the 2020 Mazda from its post? Dive in as we put both SUVs to the test and see which one comes out on top.

The 2020 Mazda CX-5 boasts an attractive sleek design with its oversized shark-nose grille and sleek sweeping headlights. Silver accents only add to the prestige of the compact SUV, while a lower bumper treatment adds a muscular sporty tone. Classy lines flow down the CX-5’s waistline until you get to the rear hatch where sleek LED accented taillights await. Available 19-inch alloy wheels speak volumes to the compact SUVs character, exuding poise and class.

The 2020 Honda CR-V boasts a less than daring design with its muted front fascia and safe styling. Afraid to upset its long running customers, the CR-V boasts angular but safe curves, LED headlights and available 19-inch wheels attempt to boost curb appeal, but its styling cues are not up to par to park next to the CX-5.

Outperforming Competition

One of two engines powers the 2020 Mazda CX-5, both of which offer power and efficiency. The base engine is a SKYACTIV®-G 2.5L 4-cylinder engine that delivers 187-horsepower and 186lb-ft of torque. Mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission, power is delivered to the front wheels or all four wheels for optimum performance.

If you crave more power, the CX-5 has more to offer. Thanks to a SKYACTIV®-G 2.5-liter Dynamic Pressure Turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, the CX-5 puts out a healthy 250-horsepower and 320lb-ft of torque. Also mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission, the turbocharged engine sends power to all four wheels for dynamic performance and traction in a range of road conditions.

Both versions of the CX-5 come with standard G-Vectoring Control Plus, a dynamic torque vectoring system that improves handling and cornering abilities while four-wheel independent suspension ensures that you remain composed and comfortable throughout your journey.

The 2020 Honda CR-V is powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that puts out 190 horsepower and 179lb-ft of torque. Mated to a Continuously Variable Transmission, the 2020 CR-V drives the front wheels, or features an available AWD system. However, rated at 190-horsepower, the Honda SUV still falls 60 horses short of the CX-5 and is over 140lb-ft of torque shy.

A True Cabin Experience

Boasting a luxurious, refined interior, the 2020 Mazda CX-5 features available fine Nappa leather seats and genuine wood trims to create an extravagant cabin. Ambient lighting sets the mood while available dual-zone automatic climate control makes sure that you and your passenger travel in total comfort. Available heated seats warm you on chilly mornings while the available power glass moonroof lets fresh air and light flood the cabin. Throughout the CX-5, luxury awaits at every touch.

With a heavy focus on utility, the 2020 Honda CR-V features none of the luxury and style featured in the CX-5, despite the fact that its seats are also available in leather. Other amenities include an available moonroof, power heated seats, and even an available wireless charger (also available on the C-5). Although the CR-V offers many of the same features that are highlighted in the CX-5, it falls short in style, and overall experience. The 2020 Honda CR-V lacks the uniqueness, and sophistication that has been built into the CX-5’s cabin. Instead, the Honda CR-V looks as if it is trying to avoid offending someone.

Efficiency Made Easy

The 2.5-liter engine that produces 187 horsepower uses advances like direct injection and cylinder deactivation to achieve maximum efficiency. Front-wheel-drive models return an EPA-estimated 25MPG in the city and 31MPG on the highway. All-wheel-drive models with the same engine return just one mile per gallon less in both city and highway categories. The turbocharged 2.5-liter SKYACTIV®G engine boasts 250 horsepower and 320lb-ft of torque, rivaling the power and torque of many V6 engines, yet manages to return an EPA estimated 22MPG in the city and 27 on the highway.

The Honda CR-V returns an EPA-estimated 34MPG on the highway when driving the front wheels, and 32MPG on the highway when driving power to all four wheels.

Safety Made Standard

The 2020 Mazda CX-5 takes a comprehensive approach to safety featuring an array of driver assist safety technologies with its standard i-Activsense®. Included in the suite is Blind Spot Monitoring to help you change lanes with confidence while Rear Cross Traffic Alert scans for oncoming traffic when you’re backing out of a driveway or parking space. Standard Lane Departure Warning System scans your marked lane and will alert you if you drift so every mile is driven with confidence.

Reaching for its own take on the safety suite, the CR-V features many of the same driver-assist technologies but does not match the advanced build quality and safety protections featured in the Mazda.
